Maui Neighborhoods - Wailuku real estate
Wailuku is a historic town. There are still a lot historic
buildings here, mostly on Vineyard streets. Across from Wailuku Courthouse
you can see the New England-style Ka'ahumanu Church, built in 1837 and
named for Queen Ka'ahumanu, one of the wives of King Kamehameha I. One
of the popular scenery in Wailuku is the Ioa Valley. This beautiful
valley was the venue of the decisive battle that enabled Kamehameha
to take control of the island. Wailuku's name, which means "water
of slaughter" is derived from this violent battle.
Kepaniwai Park and Heritage Garden - Kepaniwai means "damming of
the waters". The stream were clogged with warriors slain when Kamehameha
conquered Maui in a bloody battle in 1790. Beautifully landscaped cultural
pavilions are dedicated to the Hawaiians, Japanese, Chinese, Filipinos,
Portuguese and American missionaries.
